McMurphy, a man with several assault convictions to his name, finds himself in jail once again. This time, the charge is statutory rape when it turns out that his girlfriend had lied about being eighteen, and was, in fact, fifteen (or, as McMurphy puts it, "fifteen going on thirty-five"). Rather than spend his time in jail, he convinces the guards that he's crazy enough to need psychiatric care and is sent to a hospital. He fits in frighteningly well, and his different point of view actually begins to cause some of the patients to progress. Nurse Ratched becomes his personal cross to bear as his resistance to the hospital routine gets on her nerves

Why wasn't that last scene included in the movie, it's gold. Curious, could the electroconvulsive therapy treatment be a metaphor for the shock therapy policies that many authoritarian and post-communist countries were employing at that time? There was a scene where you could overhear a news report of the fall of the Berlin wall, so that sort of hints at it. Perhaps it is supposed to mean that an authoritarian institution cannot simply force someone into becoming better, much like how many of the countries suffered economic turmoil post-shock therapy before recovering. Same with the electroconvulsive treatments the ward performed. Perhaps this is a message that healing isn't quick and needs to be eased into, whereas both the post-communist countries and the war opted for the quick easy (and most definitely painful) method. This seems to tie in with the theme of balancing order with chaos that the video outlines. Or maybe I'm just reading into this too much. It's really difficult to say whether or not you're over interpreting something, because it's so easy to make meaning out of things that really don't have meaning. This is, at least, what I learned in my high school AP English class where I could take any random object, call it meaningful, and then get an A.

I think this movie is really dated, Nurse Ratched as women of power of course is treated like a cold bitch, but the male protagonist it´s funny and charming and everybody at the end sympathize with him for the lobotomy, but no one seems to remember that Mc Murphy was a rapist. For me he´s a psychopath, egocentric and manipulative with the others patients, so he could run the place and make new rules. Nurse Ratched on their sesion talks to the patients, she makes them questions and give them a place to communicate and think by their own. I thought I saw Lance Henriksen and Sydney Lasick in this. Am I right. She reminds me of an old female boss that I had. This person had some serious anger management issues. It took 10 years after I left her reign of terror for her to be terminated. Last I heard, she works in housekeeping at a well known national museum. My how her power has been reduced to ruble like she did to many others.

@metalordamageinc Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Hell yeah. This film is a classic that should be seen by everyone. The story is funny, disturbing, and the characters are so unique and genuine. The story shows us what can happen is authoritative figures become consumed in their own power.I've seen some hate about the ending, but in my opinion it couldn't have been better. McMurthy could have jump out of the window when he had the chance and I think most of us were rooting for him to do so, but what he does next shows the strong bond formed with his odd friends inside the hospital.

I love One Flew Over The... Its one of my faves. At first i thought Taber was just being a bully starting shit for no reason, but then i heard him shout when are you going to cut her loose, already. I know in the book, Harding's homosexuality was more overt, but the implication is still here. If his wife is trapped in a loveless marriage, neglected by a husband who can never return her feelings, cutting her loose would be best for both of them. That was an oddly insightful (though brash and perhaps unintentional) thing of Taber to say, even if he was just fed up with the other patient's prattling.

Ratched was not supposed to be an allegory or cautionary tale for women in the workplace or anti-feminists. She represents authority at large and by the end of the film and book she has not won. She loses her voice/greatest weapon and the patients get their right to play their card game and have cigarettes again. Might seem like a small victory, but it was certainly a point of purpose to show she indeed had not won.
